Have you ever helped people use their computers by talking to them over the phone, without seeing their screen? It can be frustrating if they tell you mostly irrelevant details that bury the important stuff.

This is the major problem with image description by AI. AI has no idea why the image was posted, so it gives irrelevant details.

Human-written image descriptions are much better at communicating an image's purpose.

They asked me for the advice I posted. Are you saying I shoudn't give people advice when they ask for it?

Meta's dangerous approach to moderation has been linked to several genocides (e.g. https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2021/dec/06/rohingya-sue-facebook-myanmar-genocide-us-uk-legal-action-social-media-violence ), so again I'd advise people to defederate it.

I've been saying this for years.

I am an unpaid volunteer trying to do my bit against the rise of fascism.

The reason I give up most of my spare time running my accounts and sites is to help people onto platforms that aren't owned and run by pro-fascist billionaires.

"And virtue signaling means what it means"

It's a meaningless phrase with its origins in the far right, which attempts to dismiss sincere concern for other human beings as somehow fake or staged. If you use it, this is what you imply.

How to block Bluesky from Mastodon:

1. Go to the profile page of the account @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy
2. Click ⋯
3. Click "Block Domain" to stop seeing Bluesky accounts
4. Click "Block" to prevent your own account being bridged to Bluesky

You may need to copy-paste @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy into the search box on your server to make the profile appear.

If you can't find the account @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy, your server is probably already blocking the Bluesky bridge.

Are you following an account that does good posts, but you don't want to see their boosts of other people's posts?

You can mute just an account's boosts without muting its own posts by doing the following:

1. Go to the profile of the account whose boosts you want to hide
2. Click on the ⋯ button on their profile
3. Select "Hide boosts"

(New people: "Boosts" are the name for shared posts on here. They mean the same as re-tweets or re-blogs.)
