In case you missed it, the Fedi.Garden website is now designed to make it as easy as possible to choose a reliable server on Mastodon and the wider Fediverse:

Fediverse https://fedi.garden

The new design takes people to a selection that they feel comfortable with:

- If you find choice overwhelming, it shows you one good general server (which is regularly rotated to spread the growth)

- If you enjoy choice, it shows the full directory of good servers sorted into categories

Are there certain accounts you particularly enjoy, and you don't want to miss any of their posts?

You can make sure you notice all their posts by clicking the
🔔🔔 bell icon on their profile page. (If you can't see a bell, log in through your server's website and click their profile bell that way.)

Their posts will all appear in your timeline as usual, but you will also get notifications about their posts too. More info and questions answered in the guide:

Do you want Mastodon to automatically hide certain kinds of posts?

Or do you want Mastodon to automatically place certain kinds of posts behind a content warning that you can click open?

You can do both of these things by using Mastodon's filters feature. Filters lets you automatically hide posts with particular words, phrases, hashtags, links or emoji in them. More info on how to create and use filters in the guide at:

If you're looking for accounts to follow, you might like to check out my other account FediFollows:

➡ @FediFollows@social.growyourown.services

It regularly posts themed lists of good accounts to follow, and it also has a website with thousands of recommended accounts sorted into topics:

To follow an account listed on the website, copy-paste the "Fediverse address" on its listing into the search box in Mastodon and then click "Follow".

There is a lot going on in the world right now, and it may be overwhelming at times. If you want to follow the news but you also need some way of taking mental health breaks, Mastodon's "Lists" feature might help.

Lists lets you move the accounts you follow into several separate timelines. You could for example create a "News" timeline and a "Non-News" timeline, then switch between them when you want to.

Would you like your public Mastodon posts to be as easy as possible for people to discover? If so, you might want to opt into "full text search". This will make your public posts show up in search results a lot more easily.

There's a step-by-step guide on how to activate it and answers to lots of questions about it at:

If you don't activate it, your public posts will still be searchable but only by hashtag.

Imagine a stranger spreads lies about you. They tell people you're doing horrible depraved crimes. Would you just block them?

What happens when other people don't block them? When other people believe the lies and share them?

What if this turns into real life abuse and violence against you and your family?

This is what vulnerable groups face from bigots. Bigoted accounts need to be shut down, servers which refuse to remove bigots should be defederated.

"Just block them" doesn't work.

p.s. If anyone wants a specific real life example of this actually happening, here is one:

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/aug/20/family-in-fear-after-tommy-robinson-shares-video-of-black-man-with-white-granddaughters

TL:DR -

A black grandfather played with his white grandchildren in the park, their family videoed it as it was a wholesome scene.

Far right racists stole the video and lied about its context, claiming it was actually an immigrant trying to abduct kids. The video and lies were shared to millions of people. The innocent grandfather is threatened in the street and lives in fear.

Did you know there is a reminder bot on the Fediverse? Mention the bot with a time period and it will reply or DM when that time is up. It replies in the same thread, so you can easily see why you asked for a reminder. More info in the guide:

Some reasons to use it:
- Someone posts a prediction, you want to check if it happened.
- Someone asks you a question, you want to answer later.
- You want to check an interesting thread later for new replies.
