οΈ SCAM ALERT
Some scammers are pretending to be Mastodon admins and asking people to "verify" their accounts by clicking on a link, which then asks for their card details or other sensitive info.
DO NOT CLICK THE SCAM LINK!
GENUINE MASTODON ADMINS WILL NEVER ASK YOU TO VERIFY!
There is a real verification system on Mastodon, but it's entirely optional and does not involve credit cards. Genuine verification is voluntary and based on website ownership.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services Haven't we seen this before?
p.s. Thanks to @docpop@mastodon.social for warning about this, you can see an example screenshot of one of these scams in their post at https://mastodon.social/@docpop/115930755541521231
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services I hope those motherfuckers stub their toe.

In some ways this is a sad development, but on the other hand the Fedi has clearly gained sufficient traction to make it worth while scammers targeting uses on it. I have boosted for reach.

You are also posting links, just now.
To tell people "Don't click on links" doesn't help. You would have to explain, which links they should and which they should not click.
Your links are safe cause your name is FediTips? See the problem?
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services @docpop@mastodon.social Curious, is there an evergreen page on the FediTips website of warnings like this we can check periodically? Or direct new people to?

The post gives them info about how to tell which are scam links π
I didn't say "don't click links", I said "don't click the scam link".

Good idea! I'm not sure how to approach such a page though, would people notice it without a warning post?
I guess it could be a list of common scams?

No, I don't think so, but this way you can basically focus on updating the page and have it be evergreen. I was thinking of the new users that maybe don't federate with everyone yet so might not even see your account. Could be good for us old hats too to see what we missed if we're offline. @FediTips@social.growyourown.services
