Mastodon's new server software (v4.5.0) brings a breakthrough for smaller servers:

No matter which server you are on, all replies to all discussion threads are automatically fetched as soon as you browse a discussion. It doesn't matter which server you are on or which server they are on, you will all see the same complete discussion. (Unless a user or server is banned of course.)

If you've previously held back, this is a great time to try smaller servers:

p.s. You will only see these features if your server has updated to 4.5.0, you can check your server's version by going to its website and (if you're on a computer) looking in the bottom left corner or (if you're on a phone) clicking โ˜ฐ in bottom right corner, selecting "About" and then scrolling to bottom of screen.

Some apps may not yet have these features as they've only just been released a few hours ago.

You can choose if you want a post quoted or not in its visibility settings.

p.p.s. I've updated the quoting guide on fedi.tips so it now tells people how to quote, how to write posts that can be quoted, and answers common questions aboout the quoting feature:

Okay, bonus post today! Mastodon v4.5.0 has just been released! ๐Ÿฅณ๐Ÿฅณ

This brings many improvements, most significantly:

- Fetch all replies, threads are now the same for everyone no matter which server they are on. If new replies are detected in the thread you're viewing, a box will appear that lets you load them automatically.

- Quote toots, click
๐Ÿ”๐Ÿ” boost on a post and select "Quote" to use it. If the option isn't clickable, it means the person or server hasn't given permission to be quoted.

They don't all do this, some have instant signups and others have manually approved.

I'm asking as there were some really nasty trolls who joined recently and it brought up the debate over whether sign-ups should be instant or not.

It would be nice to find out if there are ways to make screened sign-ups easier for people who currently find them difficult

There are two ways that servers on here can accept new members:

-Sign-ups where you join instantly

-Sign-ups where the server moderator has to manually approve your membership

Approval sign-ups make moderation much more effective, but some people seem to find them more difficult.

If you are someone who finds approval sign-ups more difficult, could you explain the main thing putting you off?

(By the way, this isn't meant to be judgmental, just want to find out what the main barriers are!

A number of people have asked what happens to your posts if you move your account to another Mastodon server.

If you follow all the steps in the transfer guide at
https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server your old posts will stay visible on the old server, they will let people know you've moved and your old profile will direct people to your new account.

As far as I know this is the only account transfer guide that includes steps to make sure that your old posts and profile redirect people?

We need to talk about Mastodon gGmbH. They are the main developers of Mastodon's server software & official mobile apps, they own mastodon.social and Mastodon's trademarks. Their behaviour is inexplicably going in two totally opposite directions.

A couple of years ago they started promoting mastodon.social from the official apps while hiding other servers, causing their server to grow while other servers shrank. Mastodon.social is currently about 28.7% of the active Fediverse and growing.

For comparison, another major server mas.to is just 1.2% of the active Fediverse. Mastodon.social is about twenty-four times bigger.

Mastodon users, you might want to check out the "timed mute" option, it's really useful! It lets you set a period (6 hours to 30 days) when an account is muted. It's handy for taking a break from someone.

To make a timed mute, you'll need to be using the website, web app or some third party apps. Mute as usual but before confirming the mute click "show options" and select a time period.

If you want to still get notifications from them, untick the "hide notifications" box.

Mastodon includes support for automatic translation of posts. If it's working, you will see a "translate" button below posts in foreign languages which you can click on to translate them.

If you're not seeing the "translate" option, here's a guide which covers all the reasons why not and what you can do about it:

Also, if you've wondered why your language button flashes a different colour the guide explains what's going on
