Mastodon users, you might want to check out the "timed mute" option, it's really useful! It lets you set a period (6 hours to 30 days) when an account is muted. It's handy for taking a break from someone.
To make a timed mute, you'll need to be using the website, web app or some third party apps. Mute as usual but before confirming the mute click "show options" and select a time period.
If you want to still get notifications from them, untick the "hide notifications" box.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services bruh it's like I'm right here #awkward
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services One of the best features of Mastodon! If I havenβt checked Mastodon for two or three days and have a backlog of 900 toots to read, I can mute a few less interesting accounts for 6 hours and reduce these 900 toots to maybe 400.
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services The timed mute also works for hashtags!
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services I highly recommend the timed mute. You can even use it on people you like and follow when they get into some annoying argument with a rando. It's a great mental health aid.
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services I use this regularly and it's great!
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services I use it when sports games are on, so I don't have to read about it or create a filter for the hashtag

This is one of my favorite Mastodon features.
I follow the folks I follow for a reason. I don't want to stop following them but sometimes we get a little boost-happy or we're having a day. Not everybody wants to see that all the time. It's nice to be able to lovingly put someone in a corner for a few minutes without having to explain it to them.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services I use this.
May I ask: why not make the period user-defined? Just let me set an end date/time. I would love to be able to mute someone for, say, six months.
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services This is really useful to temporarily mute those who like to write long threads, so their posts don't flood your feed. Bookmark that first "1/264" post, then mute them for however long you think it'll take them to write their epic!
That way you can still read it, but in your own time. π€·π»ββοΈ

You would have to ask the developers! I'm not a coder so I don't know how easy it is to program and implement user-defined periods.

@ApostateEnglishman@mastodon.world
Yup!
It's also handy for cooling down discussions that are in danger of getting a bit too heated, where you still respect the people and want to see their posts in the long term, but want to step back from them for a short while.
If you've ever had to bite your tongue to stay silent in a discussion, timed mutes are a great tool for helping with this. By the time the mute expires, it's easier to view the discussion calmly. It reduces accidental arguments and toxicity.
