Okay, bonus post today! Mastodon v4.5.0 has just been released! π₯³
This brings many improvements, most significantly:
- Fetch all replies, threads are now the same for everyone no matter which server they are on. If new replies are detected in the thread you're viewing, a box will appear that lets you load them automatically.
- Quote toots, click π
boost on a post and select "Quote" to use it. If the option isn't clickable, it means the person or server hasn't given permission to be quoted.
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services yay!!! I've been waiting for this. Planning to update soon!
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services excited for this release and many thanks to @MastodonEngineering@mastodon.social! β https://thepride.network will be updating tomorrow evening.
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services quotes have been a thing on some servers for a while now though and I don't think permission was required. will they all require permission or does it depend?
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services fetch all replies? Hallelujah!
p.s. You will only see these features if your server has updated to 4.5.0, you can check your server's version by going to its website and (if you're on a computer) looking in the bottom left corner or (if you're on a phone) clicking β° in bottom right corner, selecting "About" and then scrolling to bottom of screen.
Some apps may not yet have these features as they've only just been released a few hours ago.
You can choose if you want a post quoted or not in its visibility settings.
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services Regarding the last bit: it's the person or the instance, not just the person.
And usually the option is there, only striked out, often with a mention as to why it's not available.
Also, it'd perhaps be useful to remind people that not all software has that covered. #Tusky, for instance, still doesn't do quote posts.
@jorgecandeias@mastodon.social
"or the instance, not just the person."
Do you mean if the instance is on a certain version? Or do you mean there is a setting for switching off quoting?
I had a look round the new admin settings and can't find anything relating to it so far?
@jorgecandeias@mastodon.social
Good points, I'll add a p.s. to the post to make this clear.
Also need to explain how people can opt in or opt out of quoting π
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services I had to stop and restart the App for the Quote Option to become vidible.
p.p.s. I've updated the quoting guide on fedi.tips so it now tells people how to quote, how to write posts that can be quoted, and answers common questions aboout the quoting feature:

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services ha, upgraded a few minutes ago and now tested the "more replies feature". Waited quite a long time for something like that.
Maybe the next feature will be "fetch posts from profile"? We can only hope :-D
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services I seem to recall reading somewhere that quoting could be switched off by an instance admin, although I cant remember now where or when.
@thehole@dasforum.org
It is! The same dev is working on both:

Sneakers the Rat is the same one that did the more replies feature πͺ
I don't know how long it will take though, it took a few months of testing to get the more replies fully released.
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services oh, that's awesome. I remember reading a post about that feature, but didn't remember anything about it. I'm happy that it's in the works!
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services typo ;p
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services Recently added new feature: Pasting the URL of a post also quotes (especially useful when both replying and quoting).
