Now thatβs something you donβt see everyday - a 1970s era Citroen DS that has been converted to a battery electric car.

@erik@mastodon.infrageeks.social I'm not shure this would void the value of a #historic license plate in #Germany...
@erik@mastodon.infrageeks.social Want!
@erik@mastodon.infrageeks.social I got sucked into a YouTube rabbit hole on EV conversions due to this post, and I'm not even mad.
This feels like the future; the real, sustainable future. Motors that can be powered by renewable energy rather than fossil fuels, but car bodies that can still be reassembled by some dude in his garage with a standard set of tools, and control systems that you can hack with yourself using your laptop.
I get some real sense of hope that we can extract ourselves from the horrors of automotive capitalism without losing independence. Return to a world where vehicles still exist, but are no longer consumer goods, but instead tools designed to last a lifetime, as long as you can find ways to repair and refit.
@erik@mastodon.infrageeks.social oooohhhhhhh https://www.electrogenic.co.uk/bespoke/car-conversions/electric-citroen-ds/

It was futuristic looking then and even more futuristic looking now!

@erik@mastodon.infrageeks.social If there's one good thing Tesla has done, it's made poor quality cars with modular drivetrain components that mean a lot of reasonably-priced building blocks for conversions showing up in junkyards and scrapper auctions.
@erik@mastodon.infrageeks.social would absolutely drive this.
I love the idea of converting old cars, but it seems like an expensive proposition.
@erik@mastodon.infrageeks.social The drivetrain finally caught up with the amazing design.
Imagine being able to buy one of these new.

Ich wars nicht!

@stevenray@sfba.social @erik@mastodon.infrageeks.social There's a small but thriving specialist industry doing exactly that. Want an electric E-type Jaguar or an electric VW Camper, with bodywork and interior refurbished to as-new condition? There are vendors who will sell you those.

Aber die Farbe find ich schick.

My first car was a 1973 Toyota Celica, purchased used in 1978. My dream the past few years is to find one, restore it, and convert it to an electric vehicle. IMO, responsible car restoration should look at battery conversion and move us away from fossil fuel consumption.

@frauxirah@chaos.social @SilviaMarton@tooting.ch @Saupreiss@pfalz.social I don't think that's an original stock color, but it looks awesome on the DS

Do you know who has done the conversion on this DS?
@frauxirah@chaos.social @Saupreiss@pfalz.social
@SilviaMarton@tooting.ch @frauxirah@chaos.social @Saupreiss@pfalz.social Apparently a startup attached to the University of Delft. I'll ask my wife if she got the name of the company from the owner

Do you live in the Netherlands? If not, I would strongly recommend to check if you can homologise such a car in your country. (France, I guess?).
We currently have a car from another dutch conversion company here in our workshop, and there is absolutely no way that this car can be homologised here in Switzerland. Customer is now probably trying to sell the car to someone in Germany, as it could be registered there...

@SilviaMarton@tooting.ch @erik@mastodon.infrageeks.social @frauxirah@chaos.social @Saupreiss@pfalz.social My understanding is that if you can get it approved in an EU country, it should be legal in every country. Not sure I want to mess with that. Do you have a link to the car and its current weight/power? Would be interesting to see. Sadly, BE has fairly strict rules too.
@SilviaMarton@tooting.ch @frauxirah@chaos.social @Saupreiss@pfalz.social I'm in France, so I should probably find a local shop if I ever get the budget

If it's an EC type approval, then yes. If it's just what the German TΓV calls 'Einzelbetriebsgenehmigung', that's something only valid in Germany (that's the case for the car we have here now). And similar local approvals exist in other countries too.

There have been quite some startups in France. But most of them ended up with utility vehicles. Retrofit was a nice and charming idea, but economically, it's a different story.
REV was probably the most promising, but looking at their website now, it seems like they have given up on the vintage cars as well...

@SilviaMarton@tooting.ch I did not know Manufaktur Marton. Looks great. The DS was quite popular in the Netherlands and these have to be on the road. Perhaps it helps to get it listed thrrough those too? citroends.shop and 2cvgarage.nl spring to mind but there are more such as eveurope

We are focussing on the Swiss market, as we can't compete with the rest of the world anyway, with the current conversion rates of our currancy and the slightly higher wages here.
