Please someone start a company that exclusively makes and sells electronics and appliances that don’t connect to the Internet.
Could call it “Luddite”.
“Hey how’s your new Luddite dishwasher?”—“Great, it washes dishes and never crashes!”
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io I hate having my furniture connect to the Internet...
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io I'm into it! What's the monthly subscription cost for this 'Luddite'?
😜
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io I remember one time I needed a new lightbulb, and it took a while to find one that didn't connect to the internet.
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io Please subscribe me to the mail order catalogue.
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io If there are devices that a wifi/Bluetooth connections would be some functionality that folks might like - idk, a TV that can be a streaming device or a thermostat you could control remotely if you wanted to, open source the firmware and put up instructions for how to flash it to make it entirely offline or have a hobby community that could build their own stuff to connect to a local server or whatever.
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io have been thinking about this. Devices could be cheap, user repairable and have long part supply times, which would be much better for the environment. It's whole model could be simple, repairable and inexpensive. As old technology tends to be more reliable (stuff has been refined) it could be a real idea.
Of course all electronic firms would be against it....
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io double for ai
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io Yes! Put me down for an electric toothbrush that cleans my teeth really effectively, but doesn't need to connect to an app and register every movent to inform me how well I'm following the dictated programs. I have brushed my teeth in this order twice a day for 50 years, leave me alone!
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io AND CARS PLEASE
@thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io And if the appliance uses a microcontroller it and the sensors are commodity off the shelf components so a fried controller board (which happens regularly - ask me how I know) doesn’t result in a bricked appliance destined for landfill.
