@FediTips@social.growyourown.services @ash@bne.social @phocks@bne.social a question, something that very popular recent post helps highlight.
Are the differences in the boosts/likes between the two due to how far my instance has federated? The higher numbers version are looking at the toot in an external browser, the smaller numbers version is looking while logged into my instance and via an app (Ice Cubes).
No malice toward my instance is intended.

It's not a bug; it's because many accounts haven't arrived in your instance yet, so they're invisible to you. I often click on posts in the original instance to read the comments, because most of them don't appear in my instance.

Short answer: don't worry about the numbers, they aren't supposed to mean much on here anyway. This network is designed not to prioritise "clout".
Longer answer: posts federate as widely as the largest number, which is shown on the post's "original page" (more info at https://fedi.tips/what-are-original-pages-in-mastodon/).
However, the numbers may not federate as quickly or as effectively because they're a lower priority.

I notice that when I go to the original page for this post in the DDG browser, or link through to many other posts, I end up on a page for which Iβm not logged in.
Do I need to log into the original page to push federation to my server?

The original page is on the server of the person that the post belongs to.
You can't log in on their site because you don't have an account on their server.
To make a page from their site appear on your server, copy-paste the page's web address into the search box on your own Mastodon server.

Super helpful as usual.
In noticed with interest, in the linked information on βOriginal Pagesβ that going to those pages may be the only way to see profiles, introductions and other posts and replies for newer accounts that havenβt yet federated widely.
It seems to me that this is a HUGELY important point for awareness for those of us who are cautious about interacting with or accepting follow requests from what appear to be blank accounts. Thereβs a risk that some of us might inadvertently block or reject outreach from new folks because they appear not to have profiles.
Do you think you could make a specific feditip on how to look for original pages of new users?

Yes, this is indeed a big risk for new people who aren't used to how this place works, I've been trying to draw attention to this.
There's a guide explaining why profiles may look blank at https://fedi.tips/why-does-someones-account-page-look-completely-blank-is-it-really-blank/
On a related issue, the next update of Mastodon (v4.5.0) will automatically fetch all the replies in discussion threads so that everyone sees the same set of replies no matter which server they are on. A similar fix is on the way for profiles later.
