Short answer: don't worry about the numbers, they aren't supposed to mean much on here anyway. This network is designed not to prioritise "clout".

Longer answer: posts federate as widely as the largest number, which is shown on the post's "original page" (more info at
https://fedi.tips/what-are-original-pages-in-mastodon/).

However, the numbers may not federate as quickly or as effectively because they're a lower priority.

I notice that when I go to the original page for this post in the DDG browser, or link through to many other posts, I end up on a page for which I’m not logged in.

Do I need to log into the original page to push federation to my server?

The original page is on the server of the person that the post belongs to.

You can't log in on their site because you don't have an account on their server.

To make a page from their site appear on your server, copy-paste the page's web address into the search box on your own Mastodon server.

Super helpful as usual.

In noticed with interest, in the linked information on β€˜Original Pages’ that going to those pages may be the only way to see profiles, introductions and other posts and replies for newer accounts that haven’t yet federated widely.

It seems to me that this is a HUGELY important point for awareness for those of us who are cautious about interacting with or accepting follow requests from what appear to be blank accounts. There’s a risk that some of us might inadvertently block or reject outreach from new folks because they appear not to have profiles.

Do you think you could make a specific feditip on how to look for original pages of new users?

Yes, this is indeed a big risk for new people who aren't used to how this place works, I've been trying to draw attention to this.

There's a guide explaining why profiles may look blank at
https://fedi.tips/why-does-someones-account-page-look-completely-blank-is-it-really-blank/

On a related issue, the next update of Mastodon (v4.5.0) will automatically fetch all the replies in discussion threads so that everyone sees the same set of replies no matter which server they are on. A similar fix is on the way for profiles later.

"...threads so that everyone sees the same set of replies no matter which server they are on. "
