If you're on a Mastodon server that needs to have the highest level of user safety, you might want to talk to your admin about whether they should activate "limited federation mode".
This mode prioritises safety over connectivity, and means a server manually chooses which servers it allows federation with, while blocking all the rest by default. More info at:

(Its main disadvantage is it's a lot harder to follow accounts on other servers.)

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services By that logic why aren't all accounts on the Fedi just automatically friends?
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services
I can see how this could be useful when using the instance as "intranet"
But otherwise it would make it a "antisocial media"
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services
Doesn't this remove the core reason to have the fediverse? This is censorship, and must not be normalized.
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services first sentence seems to imply federation is bad for safety..which. it isn't?
maybe rephrase as "if you need to lock down your server / have more control over who you federate with" or something
@baardhaveland@snabelen.no
It's an option that is there for those who want or need to use it. No one is being forced to use it, and the vast majority of servers don't use it.
It's just meant to give people the tools they need for their particular situation.

Any kind of connection to the internet is innately dangerous. But it's internet connections that allow people to communicate with each other online.
So, these two things have to be balanced against each other: connectivity vs safety. It's always been like this for any platform.
Blocklists make connections easier but reduce safety, allowlists are much safer but make connections much more difficult. Neither is perfect but different people may prefer/require a different balance.
