If you're on a Mastodon server that needs to have the highest level of user safety, you might want to talk to your admin about whether they should activate "limited federation mode".

This mode prioritises safety over connectivity, and means a server manually chooses which servers it allows federation with, while blocking all the rest by default. More info at:

maybe rephrase as "if you need to lock down your server / have more control over who you federate with" or something

Any kind of connection to the internet is innately dangerous. But it's internet connections that allow people to communicate with each other online.

So, these two things have to be balanced against each other: connectivity vs safety. It's always been like this for any platform.

Blocklists make connections easier but reduce safety, allowlists are much safer but make connections much more difficult. Neither is perfect but different people may prefer/require a different balance.
