@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @_L1vY_@mstdn.social So disappointing. If humans don’t stop consuming the amount of animal products we’re currently eating (beef especially), we’re doomed. Animal agriculture is a major driver of deforestation and the extinction crisis, uses massive amounts of water while polluting waterways and emits somewhere around 15 to 20% of greenhouse gases worldwide.

I guess the beef industry’s stupid propaganda command center is working (link to article in alt text).

It was over processed "food" and very expensive. I create better tasting and healthier homecooked meat substitutes.

People can still eat less or no animal products. But getting ultra-processed crap (including Beyond Meat) off the market is certainly better for human health
πŸ€·β€β™€οΈπŸ€·β€β™€οΈ

And I suspect they've failed for related reasons. Many vegetarians eat that way for health reasons, and these meat substitutes don't qualify. Others do it for ethical reasons, in which case they usually don't want a product that looks and tastes like dead animals.

This was just the capitalist bro take on the veganism market.

@me_valentijn@m.ai6yr.org @ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org @_L1vY_@mstdn.social Gonna have to disagree with you. Just because something is processed, doesn’t make it unhealthy. Meat substitutes make it easier for people to transition to veganism. I’ve been vegan for 8 years and still eat meat substitutes. My bloodwork is stellar for someone my age.

The research is pretty conclusive - ultra-processed is unhealthy. A modest amount of unhealthy items can be safely integrated into a healthy lifestyle, but that doesn't make those food items themselves any less problematic.

And unhealthy foods become a bigger problem when falsely marketed as being healthy. There's a massive diet industry built around ultra-processed foods which promise fewer calories but are engineered to drive increased consumption.
