Are you capable of forming imaginary images, and seeing them clearly in your "mind's eye"?
@mcc@mastodon.social Yes, vividly and in full colour. Complete with sounds, physical sensations and smells, which are often the trigger for predominantly visual recollections or "premonitions" (I mean this in the non-supernatural sense of imagining a possible outcome).
I've known people with aphantasia who've tried to explain what it's like, and am unable to grasp it. I'm utterly unable to even begin to comprehend "thinking" without being able to mentally explore virtual realities. That is thinking for me.
@mcc@mastodon.social I like that the first person to respond to this poll (me) identifies as aphantasic.
[Poll]
Do you have serious difficulty interpreting the faces or facial expressions of other people?
@alan@mindly.social Aphantasia turns out to be pretty common! Given that it's odd the degree to which it is not discussed, or at least I didn't encounter it being widely discussed until fairly recently.
@mcc@mastodon.social It wasn't until maybe five years ago that I discovered that for some people "mind's eye" was some kind of literal visual thing! I always thought it was metaphorical.

How do you feel about your decisions (cumulative up to this moment)?
@mcc@mastodon.social Like many neurotypicals, I barely listen to the content of what people are saying if their body language, including facial expressions or audio cues (such as stress tones) contradict it.
It's second-nature for many of us - not learned, just raw instinct honed by experience.
@alan@mindly.social @mcc@mastodon.social "relax, imagine being on a beach"... Should I be relaxed? This thing doesn't work
@zarel@mas.to @mcc@mastodon.social I am dumbfounded to learn that when you say "imagine a purple elephant", most people can see a purple elephant. What??
