WTF?
[tall photo]

Went out this morning to put fresh water in the bird bath and noticed these strange holes dug in the fallow flower garden amid the damn elm saplings.

Never seen anything like this. There are no tailings like would be seen if dug by a coyote or dog. Nothing like the typical gopher or ground squirrel holes. No scraping or scuffing I could see. No foot prints in the dry dirt. All digging confined to area in photo.

Should have put down a ruler for scale, but metal post at right is 3/4" in diameter and 20" are exposed.

Bottom center is a large unbroken clod of earth that must have been pulled out whole. The concrete top of a septic tank is a couple of feet below grade.

Any ideas?

Racoon? Skunk?

@ICareAboutTheWorld@mas.to Thanks. Those would be the most likely candidates as both are in area and have been spotted in the yard. Only ever seen small holes before which might be skunk, but these are much larger (and there is no residual "aroma". πŸ˜‰πŸ˜‰

Web says raccoons "flip over sod", so that could account for the intact dirt clod. I had them attack bird feeders (which is why I bring them in at night), but digging holes would be new for my yard.

I appear to have similar digging in parts of my yard...at 9,440 feet.

This photo does not show it, but sometimes I can see a very small entrance hole that is only about an inch and a half in diameter. I have no idea what Critter is making this.
