Here I am with my telephoto lens looking for birds to photograph and can't find one anywhere.

Photo of Harris's Hawk by my friend Linda near Bosque del Apache NWR. This photo was used on the cover of their visitor magazine years ago. Thought you might enjoy seeing it.

You may not care, but I set up my Winter Olympics filter this morning. I love all those winter sports, even in off-years, but don't watch live. Since I rely on replays I set extensive filters to (hopefully) block spoilers. I hate spoilers as they truly spoil my fun.

I mention this because if you happen to include a trigger word in a post I won't see the post. I'm not avoiding you, just the chance of learning the outcome of a race.

Love Mastodon for including the filter feature!

This mature Ponderosa pine stands next to a small wash. Note all the pinecones that have fallen below the tree ready to seed the next generation. That likelihood is slim, however, as this tree is close to the lower limit of the species range due to both elevation and that it is at the edge of the sandstone drylands.

Question for those with kids/grandkids who grew up in the digital clock era: do any of the young folks say "it was a quarter to nine" or "half an hour"?

I have an
apple_inc watch, but 99% of the time use an analog face. I noted the time when I moved my irrigation hose (about a quarter hour ago.)

WTF?
[tall photo]

Went out this morning to put fresh water in the bird bath and noticed these strange holes dug in the fallow flower garden amid the damn elm saplings.

Never seen anything like this. There are no tailings like would be seen if dug by a coyote or dog. Nothing like the typical gopher or ground squirrel holes. No scraping or scuffing I could see. No foot prints in the dry dirt. All digging confined to area in photo.

Should have put down a ruler for scale, but metal post at right is 3/4" in diameter and 20" are exposed.

Bottom center is a large unbroken clod of earth that must have been pulled out whole. The concrete top of a septic tank is a couple of feet below grade.

Any ideas?
