I guess I'm stupid. I thought it would be the US trying to cut off the straits since Iran is 100% dependent on that waterway to get its (20% of world...) oil exports out to e.g. Pakistan.

Why would Iran halt that?
What is it that I do not know?

Side note: I am finding it impossible to say "the West" and mean the US and Europe. The US is not part of a western alliance anymore in my head. It has divorced western democratic ideals.

Ah, well, that's me told. I hope the Security Council realises this would hurt everyone but the US, and give Trump the card he is looking for.
