I guess I'm stupid. I thought it would be the US trying to cut off the straits since Iran is 100% dependent on that waterway to get its (20% of world...) oil exports out to e.g. Pakistan.

Why would Iran halt that?
What is it that I do not know?

Side note: I am finding it impossible to say "the West" and mean the US and Europe. The US is not part of a western alliance anymore in my head. It has divorced western democratic ideals.

Ah, well, that's me told. I hope the Security Council realises this would hurt everyone but the US, and give Trump the card he is looking for.

From @newseye.bsky.social, June 22, 2025 Breaking Iran's parliament approved the closure of the Strait of Hormuz. Decision needs ratified by Iran's Security Council. It would trap 20% of the world's oil supply and send a catastrophic shock through the global economy. Includes a photo showing the location of the Strait of Hormuzbetween Iran to the north, and the point of the UAE, side-by-side Oman, to the south. It creates a narrowing of the Persian gulf before it becomes the Gulf of Oman, and the Arabian sea, which is the access to ocean for Pakistan, a major oil customer of Iran.
