This outstanding article related to #NativePlants has many useful points for preparing for the next growing season and improving the #environment in general. I'll pull out some main ideas in a threaded series this week.
First up: Insects are the primary conduits for energy to get from plants to animals. And lowly caterpillars turn out to be the most important.
Our job, gardeners, is to plant more caterpillar food!

Per the articleβ
οΈ, the population of American birds has declined by 30% since the 1970s. To help, you must support the bugs that the birds need to reproduce. But only 14% of #NativePlants generate 90% of the yummy caterpillars that drive food webs!
So are you planting these?

In a backyard setting, a small pond will be very beneficial to #wildlife. Here's the hand-dug bi-level pond in my garden. The upper section is shallow for animals to bathe and drink: bees, birds, bunnies. The lower section is wider (<4.5 feet) deeper (<3 feet). #Frogs in my area prefer small quiet ponds.
The special black liner can be purchased, seen here because deer, my nemesis, knocked many rocks off.
More in future toots.

What do owners do for their lonely and bored parrots, which are social animals? Give them tech to video call other parrots, of course.
Parrots were taught how to make video calls to other parrots. During free call time over a period of two months, they "came alive". Some showed each other their toys. Some developed best friends.
There's more. Watch it for yourself.

Ethel Waters was a child of rape and a child bride at 13 to an abusive husband, but rose to star at the Cotton Club, be the highest-paid performer on Broadway, be the first African American to star in her own television show, be nominated for an Academy Award, and, well, there's plenty more.
She was also reportedly bisexual and had a significant LGBTQ following.
Crystal Waters is her grand niece.

The American Beautyberry is known for bright purple berries late in the season, but its bundles of small pink flowers give it charm in the summer.
The berries are eaten by dozens of songbirds when other preferred foods have run out. The berries are a reason we have towhees, cardinals, thrashers, and mockingbirds in our garden.

Report: State of the Butterflies in the United States
π¦
More than one-fifth of our butterflies disappeared between 2000 and 2020.
π¦
Over 40% of assessed species fell in numbers by 50% or moreβand two dozen species suffered more than 90% losses.
π¦
"Butterfly habitat should be woven into all parts of our landscapesβfarmland, utility corridors, solar arrays, bike paths, roadsides, natural areas, and backyard and community gardensβto provide homes for common and wide-ranging butterflies as well as rare and at-risk species."
π¦
"To recover butterflies, we must combine efforts across towns and cities, working lands, and natural areas as well as in the linkages and stepping stones which provide connecting pathways."
π
All is not lost! Have a garden, pots or access to a natural area or park? Join me in building back habitat for butterflies. I will post useful resources and share my experiences and tips. Share yours as well.
π·
I'll also post butterfly gardens from my travels. Many have a head start in this.

Always trying to get a shot of Goldfinches but they are very skittish. Finally, when I'm far away, a trio, known in this #garden as The Marauders, pick seeds from Coneflowers while a Tiger Swallowtail feeds on a Shasta Daisy.
They should continue to have food through the early winter because I have made sure to maintain flowers and shrubs that will support them, like Beautyberry, Asters, and Thistles.

This past week I've been a little quiet because I've been busy with one of my favorite #volunteering activities. It takes place one week each year, helping process applications for the Native Forward Scholars Fund, the largest direct scholarship provider to Native American students. Every year they distribute about $12 million in scholarships to indigenous students all over the U.S.
π₯²
While I don't make any decisions, I do see individuals spending years learning health, engineering, business, agriculture and more in order to eventually serve their communities. It's one positive, uplifting story after another.
π
So bring on the doom and gloom posts. This week, I am impervious.
πͺ
If you know someone who meets the criteria and could benefit, definitely pass along this link: https://www.nativeforward.org/
π
And if you are ever in need of a lift, please consider becoming a #volunteer. Helping others makes you feel better. It's science!
