Ethel Waters was a child of rape and a child bride at 13 to an abusive husband, but rose to star at the Cotton Club, be the highest-paid performer on Broadway, be the first African American to star in her own television show, be nominated for an Academy Award, and, well, there's plenty more. 
She was also reportedly bisexual and had a significant LGBTQ following.
Crystal Waters is her grand niece.
