p.s. If you're already on mastodon.social, you can move to a different server.
If you only just signed up and have no or very few followers, easiest option is probably to sign up on another server and forget about your mastodon.social account.
if you've already got a significant number of followers and you want to keep them, you can move your account to another server using the transfer process. There's a non-technical step-by-step guide to moving your account here: https://fedi.tips/transferring-your-mastodon-account-to-another-server
p.p.s. For people wondering why mas.to is better option than mastodon.social, here are some figures:
mastodon.social currently has ~20% of active Fediverse accounts
mas.to currently has ~1% of active Fediverse accounts
Mastodon.social is just so much larger than other servers and keeps growing, it is putting the network itself in danger.
I totally get the idea of having a single suggested server, but we need to regularly rotate which single server is suggested so we spread growth out.
If you're helping people sign up on here, that's great! 👏
However, I'd strongly suggest not signing up on the mastodon.social server. It's way way too large and that's dangerous (here's why https://fedi.tips/its-a-really-bad-idea-to-join-a-big-server).
I know some find choice overwhelming, so if you just want one general long-established very busy server https://mas.to is a better option for example.
There are also lots of other good servers listed at https://fedi.garden and https://joinmastodon.org/servers

Bluesky CEO trolling trans people and trans allies
Okay, this is a bit convoluted but tl:dr is the CEO of Bluesky is now deliberately trolling people who are concerned about trans rights.
She posted today and you can see from the responses how this has gone down: https://web.archive.org/web/20251002190531/https://bsky.app/profile/jay.bsky.team/post/3m2a73ot5uk2e
"Waffles" refers to a conversation she had yesterday, I've attached the screenshot. It depicted Bluesky users as weirdos unreasonably criticising opponents, comparing them to pancake fans inexplicably attacking waffle fans.
When someone asked if she would ban an alleged transphobe, she replied "WAFFLES".

Have you customised your Mastodon profile yet?
Profiles can be customised in lots of ways including pictures, banners, text, links, verification, pinned post threads etc. There's a complete guide to all the different ways to customise a profile at:

By the way, the text description on your profile is perhaps the most important part. The text is often overlooked or an afterthought, but it is one of the main ways people discover accounts on here.

Are you receiving automated emails from your Mastodon server when stuff happens? Do you want them to stop, or adjust which events trigger them?
You can adjust your email notification settings by logging onto your Mastodon server's website and going to Preferences > Email Notifications, tick or un-tick boxes depending on what you want, then click "Save Changes".
More info including how to do this on the mobile version of the website in the guide at:

If you follow a Ghost site from Mastodon etc, it isn't just a one-way feed.
Ghost sites are actually on the Fediverse and they can interact with Mastodon etc accounts, they can favourite, boost and reply.
You can see Ghost site @sam@bl.ag replying to @FediFollows@social.growyourown.services here: https://social.growyourown.services/@FediFollows/115293813549700275
This is two-directional, Fediverse-compatible websites can seamlessly talk with people on Fediverse-compatible social networks. This is how the open web is supposed to work.
#FediTips #Fediverse #ActivityPub
p.s. This doesn't work for 100% of Ghost sites, but it seems to work for most of them. It depends on whether they have Fediverse compatibility switched on.
p.p.s. I know the discovery process above is fiddly, which is why I've started manually curating good quality Ghost sites that are Fedi compatible on fedi.directory along with their Fediverse addresses. You can browse the ones listed so far at https://fedi.directory/tag/Ghost and just paste the addresses straight into your Mastodon etc search box.
p.p.p.s. If you are finding this all a bit complicated and you just want to click on an account and follow it, you can see lots of good Ghost accounts listed in the latest post thread over at @FediFollows@social.growyourown.services
(Don't worry if an account looks blank, this is normal. This is caused by being the first person from your server to follow an account, but new posts by the account will show up as they are published.)
Thousands of sites using the popular #Ghost platform are now Fediverse compatible, so you can follow them from Mastodon etc 🥳
Here's how to discover and follow them:
1. Go to https://explore.ghost.org
2. Click category tab you want (swipe categories right to see more)
3. Click on a site to preview, then box-arrow icon to go to it
4. Copy the site's domain name
5. Paste @ index @ (domain name) into the search box in Mastodon etc without spaces
6. Click the profile and then "Follow"
