A) Someone you follow boosts that post.
B) You follow a hashtag on the post.
You can mute or block people if you want to remove them from your home feed.
You can also go to an account you follow and hide boosts from that account.

This is what you see in your feed:
-Posts from accounts you follow
-Posts shared by accounts you follow
-Posts with a hashtag you're following
You can check which hashtags you're following by various methods depending on how you access Mastodon. If you're on the official mobile app go to your profile page and click the # icon at the top. If you're on the website click the "Followed hashtags" option.
