If you're recommending Mastodon and the wider Fediverse to organisations, friends, family or colleagues, don't worry if they say no. You have done something really important simply by making them aware of it as an option.

Most people and organisations don't immediately try stuff they hear about. Usually they need to hear it mentioned by a few different sources before they actually try it.

By being one of those sources, you're nudging them closer to actually trying it

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services I like that you mentioned the specific part of "usually they need to hear it mentioned by a few different sources before they actually try it".
This has to be the most important single piece of information for anyone trying to do activism. Always.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services who would trust mastodon based sites on first viewing??

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services years ago, a small-business class prof said studies show folks need to hear about a new product about 7 times before they engage/buy/shop. It’s ok to be one of the 7 or whatever. I also mutter β€˜yeah, fedi doesn’t do that’ offline and online.

When I mention Mastodon to a friend or writer, I always suggest a couple of instances to check out, so they don't just land on .social out of not knowing others exist

There's been a lot of surveys lately on which Social Media platform one uses ... Xitter, Metabook, Spotify etc and many I've never heard of ... and there's one that has an Other box ... so I tick that and add Mastodon :)

PS. When I add something on Xitter I saw here I say it's from the Elephant Place because whenever I put Mastodon the post would disappear ...

Sad thing is ... too many people don't want to just communicate with like minded people, gain knowledge or just have a chat ... they are so mean, unloved and miserable, they want to make everybody else miserable too ...

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services This applies to a lot of things and is generally very good advice: Do not try to force people. Nudge, inspire, share and educate, but let people make their own decisions. Change needs time.

Sending posts and memes you like from fedi, just like you would twixxer, is a soft step too without necessarily proselytizing

Edit: to add, it also shows its an active "living" platform(s)

You'll know your audience best, but just in case this helps at all, I've done a site at
https://fedi.garden which tries to make it as easy as possible to sign up (and it doesn't list mastodon.social).

@MyView@aus.social @FediTips@social.growyourown.services I've found that most people actually just want an algorithmic feed of high dopamine content. I can't help but conclude that the existing for-profit social media is currently a better choice for that.

Some certainly want to be fed lies and propaganda and told what to believe, do and say ... saves them thinking ...

That's super handy! I landed where I am on the recommendation of Levi Fetterman, the twitter account of John Fetterman's rescue dog! Total good luck ending up on one of
@stux@mastodon.coffee instances!

I think it's one of those things where people think they are choosing something, but when they're given a chance to properly try an alternative a lot of people do switch to the alternative.

Like... a lot of people eat junk food, but if they're given easy access to high quality tasty food a lot will switch.

It's easy to get stuck in a certain way if those are the only options available to you.

I'm not saying it'll work for everyone, but I think it's worth trying

Some of us do both :)
I'm still on Metabook because family and real life friends are and they occasionally ask if I'm still alive :)

Still on Xitter because that's the way to read my preferred Independent News Sources ... and I'm hopeful of seeing a big fall :)

As for junk food ... don't like the taste and the Fish & Chip shop I used to use when grandies were children, is too far away now ...

When Mastodon first made an appearance a lot of people on Xitter announced they were leaving and registered here ... never seen their ID pop up though ... they went to Bluesky ... then back on Xitter :)

Oh yeah, I'm on there too ... haven't been back for months though ...

So it's Xitter for finding out what the government is doing, and here for the linked articles and chats :)
