@hollie@social.coop @FediTips@social.growyourown.services I'd like Mastodon to be a place where not just techy people feel at home. Forcing people to learn about instances before they join scares away non-techy folks. It's an unintentional form of gate keeping that harms our cultural diversity.

It's not about being techy, it's about protecting this place from disappearing. If people keep joining mastodon.social this whole place could cease to exist.

New people don't have to learn about instances, they just have to join an instance that isn't mastodon.social. For example the experience of joining mas.to would be practically identical for a new person, but it won't be threatening the existence of the Fediverse.

Also, mastodon.social's moderation is very bad.
