I’m finding that my requests to follow PeerTube accounts from my Mastodon account don’t seem to be accepted. Is this a function of the accounts nor being monitored for requests or something else that’s unrelated?

Thanks!

@helianthropy@tech.lgbt I suggest trying to follow the individual channel not the owner account. Within PeerTube, when viewing videos, you only have the option to subscribe(follow) a channel, not the owner’s account.

@dannekrose@brioco.social Okay. Based on your description, I’ve done that (tried subscribing to a channel and not an owner). I’ve also now tried the remote subscribe option on the PeerTube video page but am not getting any feedback when I press the β€œremote subscribe” button (other than a highlight of the button).

It took a little while for me to realize the comments happen in Mastodon but the video watching happens on the PeerTube page, but this is stumping me.

@helianthropy@tech.lgbt When I test searching for a channel in Mastodon using the full channel "account", it looks like the following.

If you see this and can follow, then you did it correctly. You will get all new videos showing up in your timeline, but not already-published ones that haven't been seen by your instance yet.

@dannekrose@brioco.social I see. Okay. Based on what I’m seeing on this account, I guess I was targeting the owner and not the channel? In Mastodon, the channel is essentially boosting the owner’s videos?

Thanks.

@helianthropy@tech.lgbt Yes, in Mastodon the Channel will boost the video that the owner's account posted. In Mastodon, the Channels will be listed as a "Group" account.

On Mastodon, it does not look like the videos will play in your timeline. In other platforms, the videos will show up with a built-in player and you can watch without having to open up the original link, but Mastodon doesn't appear to do that, requiring a click on the link to view.

I do not use Mastodon for this instance so I had to check using the test site.

"On Mastodon, it does not look like the videos will play in your timeline."

This is incorrect, PeerTube videos will play fine within Mastodon timelines. The videos embed and play just like they do on other platforms.

However, if you're using Android mobile apps the embedding won't work due to limitations of Android regarding embedding in apps.

This conversation brought to light something I wasn’t quite understanding about PeerTube.

It’s important to copy the account address from the Video Channel page and not the Account (owner’s page) page to get the appropriate subscription happening. Checking the β€œHow do I follow PeerTube accounts from Mastodon?” on the Fedi Tips site, not seeing that nuance, FYI.

You can follow accounts, is there something going wrong when you try to do so? The channel is only if you want to see a specific sub-set of the videos from that account. Following the account shows all of its videos.

For example you should be able to follow my PeerTube account
@fedivideo@fedi.video from Mastodon?

If you're seeing requests going unanswered that means something went wrong as PeerTube accounts do not use follow requests. Try unfollowing, waiting and then following again.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services Unfollowing and following again worked for one account, still issues following a different account. I was trying to not be impolite with multiple requests, but this helps solve part of the mystery. Thanks!

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services Trying from a computer browser this time (instead of my app), it looks like the account I still have an issue with is on an older version of PeerTube, but it does show that I’m following when I check my Mastodon account via the browser. πŸ™ƒπŸ™ƒ

We’ll see if I actually get the posts going forward, though.

Yeah, the older versions of PeerTube did have problems accepting follows from some people.

Newer versions of PeerTube seem to have fixed this as far as I know, but if the server is running on older PeerTube it may still cause "follow requests" to appear when followed from Mastodon.
