@tinker@infosec.exchange @jackel23gr@mastodon.world Yup. I remember that one. I boosted it, saw people questioning it, then went to do the research. It's so infuriating when something so validating turns out to be false. Infuriating, embarrassing...and destabilizing. "What other things have I believed and shared that aren't based in reality?" The clannish lizard brain does not want to accept being wrong.

Ftr I unboosted that one.

@courtcan@mastodon.social @tinker@infosec.exchange @jackel23gr@mastodon.world what happens when you "unboost" a toot? Is is better to leave it up but leave a reply? @FediTips@social.growyourown.services

@jrdepriest@infosec.exchange @courtcan@mastodon.social @jackel23gr@mastodon.world @FediTips@social.growyourown.services - Got a response that says its better to edit the post as it sends out a notification to everyone that edited it. I like that better!

Edit: So if you wrote the original post: edit it. If you boosted someone else's post, unboost it (to remove it from your timeline)

If you unboost a toot, it disappears from your profile timeline and it disappears from the Home timelines of people who follow you (unless they have seen it boosted by someone else, or unless they follow the boosted account too).

If it's your own post that has info you want to withdraw, it is indeed much better to edit or delete it.

Replies are the worst way of correcting stuff because people are much less likely to see the correction in a reply.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services @tinker@infosec.exchange @jrdepriest@infosec.exchange @courtcan@mastodon.social @jackel23gr@mastodon.world misinfo needs some de-boosting mechanism where you can retract a boost and notify everyone who boosted it after your boost put it in front of them. Quote posts might help, though maybe not as implemented.

You can sort of do this by unboosting, then writing a totally new post where you say "About that thing I just boosted, I unboosted it because it turns out that it's a load of rubbish. Here's more info..." or whatever.

It will go to the same audience that saw your boost, because they both go to your followers.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services if you follow a non-trivial number of accounts and hashtags, the timeline is like a firehose, and you only see the current ~30 minutes, so many people are going to miss the correction if it's not a notification.

Ahhh okay, fair enough. I think quote toots would do what you're asking?

I think you can edit your quote-toot and the edit would trigger a notification for everyone who boosted your quote-toot.

(Having said that, still need to see how quoting works in the final release version though, it's still in final testing.)

However, that might be worse because you'd still be showing the boost and not everyone notices the quote section. Also boosts help posts rise up the trending section.
