This is how servers work on here:
You sign up on a server, your account only works on that server.
However, the servers talk to each other so you can seamlessly follow and interact with people from other servers as if it's all one giant network. For example you are on a different server to me, but you see this post and can reply, share, like etc.
It's like how phones let you call people on different operators.
There are many important reasons why it works like this: https://fedi.tips/why-is-the-fediverse-on-so-many-separate-servers
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services How does Search work across different servers?
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services One curious thing I've noticed here is that majority of posts hardly have any interactions in them, even from users who have amassed a thousand followers. Is this some sort of a federation issue or simply something common?
@purpleglazedbeaver@mstdn.dk @FediTips@social.growyourown.services
From what I've seen and experienced it is common. I guess people here just don't feel the need to react to everything and no algorithm definitely helps with that :D
@purpleglazedbeaver@mstdn.dk
It's probably a federation issue, this should be fixed by a feature due to come in an update soon which automatically fetches missing posts from a conversation thread no matter which server you're on.
(For any techy people reading this, there are technical details of the feature at https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/pull/32615)
In the meantime you can check what the interactions really look like by viewing a post's "original page": https://fedi.tips/what-are-original-pages-in-mastodon/
@t_robinart@mastodon.art @FediTips@social.growyourown.services It certainly does make the place appear inactive. Perhaps I could help by commenting on posts I find interesting.
Real question as a newbie: is it OK commenting on random posts that would not necessitate comments? Would it come out as creepy instead?
@purpleglazedbeaver@mstdn.dk @t_robinart@mastodon.art
Replying to posts is usually fine as long as it's relevant and polite (unless the person specifically says in the post not to reply).
