From what I've seen and experienced it is common. I guess people here just don't feel the need to react to everything and no algorithm definitely helps with that :D

Real question as a newbie: is it OK commenting on random posts that would not necessitate comments? Would it come out as creepy instead?

Replying to posts is usually fine as long as it's relevant and polite (unless the person specifically says in the post not to reply).
