βCopyright class actions could financially ruin AI industry, trade groups say.β
The thing is, thereβs nothing to ruin.
Theyβre already not making any money and operating at a loss and investors want hundreds of billions, perhaps trillions in payback.
Also perhaps they should have thought of this before the criming.

AI is being funded by the fossil fuel industry for non-monetary reasons.
Alwaleed bin Talal wasted billions from Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund to get Musk entrenched at Twitter in time for the elections.
The fossil fuel industry is prepared to waste billions more to thwart any democracy acting on climate change.

Koch Network, Russia & OPEC is prepared to do literally anything, including world war, to keep its captive consumer markets for oil.
@Npars01@mstdn.social @thomasfuchs@hachyderm.io the thing I donβt get is why donβt they shift their focus and become energy & chemistry companies? If customers want non fossil energy sources, theyβll end up buying them somewhere, why arenβt the fossil energy companies making the switch to sell those?

Remember the transition from horses to automobiles & bicycles.
Both innovations eradicated millions of jobs.
Buggy whip makers. Farriers. Carriage, cart & wagon makers. Blacksmiths. Saddle makers. Horse breeders. Hansom cabs. Manure collectors. Horsehair upholstery makers.
These industries vanished because there was no longer a desire to buy their products. Their markets vanished.
The fossil fuel industry doesn't want what they did, to happen to them in turn.
@ShadSterling@mastodon.social theyβre trading privately stranded assets. The moment they pivot their assets are publicly stranded. And all of capitalism with it.
Capitalism is adding renewables, made with coal, transported into place with oil. It does not know how to retire the enabling base resource. In part because it has made essentially no effort to decarbonise manufacturing. And people want a painful transition to an imaginary future made pain free

They're conservatives. They're congenitally incapable of change management or progressive reform
They're Monday Morning Quarterbacks who sit on the sidelines to criticize, not contribute
An ideology that depends on science denial, dogma, regression, & the mythologization of the past
"A conservative is someone who stands athwart history, yelling Stop, at a time when no one is inclined to do so, or to have much patience with those who so urge it"

The longer the fossil fuel industry postpones, the higher the cost & the longer the prolongation of the pain.
