Three things I'll give the extreme right wing:
They have dominated the statewide elections for 30 years now when the Dems have abandoned all the "flyover" states.
They developed an incredible political machine to allow them to point a gun at the head of every single one of their elected officials and say: "vote even farther right wing or be primaried", and they actually have the numbers to show up in primaries and do it.
They have very clear and straightforward populist messages like: Things are bad, give me power and I'll make things great again. It's those people's fault that things are bad, I'll get rid of them. People are frustrated with the status quo. They really want someone to give them hope for a better world. But the only thing Democrats have been willing to campaign on is "we'll keep things the same way they are".

@JessTheUnstill@infosec.exchange @Legit_Spaghetti@mastodo.neoliber.al exactly. And a lot of us lefties still vote blue, not because we want to keep things the same but because Democrats are an easier ruling class to fight. But people who are super privileged under the current system get really mad when the disadvantaged try to change it so we can get a goddamn break--whether that means voting for Trump, voting third party, or voting for Democrats and then daring to still criticize them or expect anything out of them
