Yeah, I did run update.php manually.

...but I just realized that I am using MediaWiki 1.44.0 (i.e. the latest version), and there is no SMW version for that yet.

I guess I found my problem.

Yes, SMW 5.1.0 does not fully support running on MW 1.44, but installation should work either (at least it was no problem for me).

However, if you encounter problems during update, you should disable (all|any|single) extensions and enable them step by step again. Sometimes, there are some breaking changes and/or you need to adapt something in LocalSettings.php . Since any installation is different in terms of configuration and extentions, it's hard to support.

Okay, thanks. I guess my best bet is to restore a previous snapshot and then take these steps one by one, right?

Good idea. Stay at MW 1.43 if you need SMW ;-)

SMW update to support MW 1.44 could take a while ...

...
allegedly they are planning to release a compatible version of SMW in August.

But truth to be told, my use case for SMW is not
that urgent right now. I can wait a few months, if necessary.
