I should point out that my interest is less in traditional "fairy tales" than in local local legends. The former tend to be more universal in their narratives, while the latter are deeply embedded in local geography, history, and culture.
I've even put most of these tales on an interactive map - either the town where they come from, or the actual place where the legend supposedly took place. You can see them for yourself on this interactive map!

Apart from that, one of my major interests are tabletop role-playing games - another form of oral storytelling which IMO is a worthy successor to the oral storytellers of old.

I have been thinking for quite some time that we need a decentralized network for preserving public domain works. The #InternetArchive is important, but they are one single American organization and thus vulnerable (and the fact that they are playing fast and loose with copyright sometimes doesn't help). We need to spread those works out more.
The CIA just stopped publishing their World Factbook and took every page, including the archived copies of previous versions!
This sucks. It was public domain, so I recovered the 2020 edition (the last one published as a zip file) and shared it to GitHub https://simonwillison.net/2026/Feb/5/the-world-factbook/

I could say a number of things, like the enthusiastic reception of my readers or the money that goes to my bank account every month (hey, I need to survive in late-stage Capitalism, too!). One of the self-indulgent writing projects I sometimes fantasize about is a "folk tale collection" of tales set in a #DnD - type fantasy world.
Complete with pseudo-academic commentary by scholars.
Many have tried to use stolen altar bread for magic. Some have even succeeded - to the ultimate detriment of their souls.
