"James said Kinew's declaration of a second state of emergency in Manitoba "confirmed what many Americans have feared: that Canada is not doing nearly enough to stop these fires before they start."

True enough we are not doing enough to combat climate change but then neither is the Unites States. There is more than enough blame to go around.

Thanks for the question. 93% of wildfires in Canada are caused by lightning strikes. Any meaningful demand for the country to curb wildfires logically amounts to a demand to reduce lightning strikes.

There are other ways to reduce wildfires, and many of these have been implemented or are being implemented now. But realistically you are not going to reduce the overall frequency and extent of wildfires in Canada to a meaningful degree in the face of rapidly increasing climate heating and lightning frequency affecting a forest area of 3.69 million sq km (
https://natural-resources.canada.ca/forest-forestry/state-canada-forests/much-forest-does-canada-have). Radically ending further climate heating with severe controls on fossil fuel use especially is fervently opposed by the US Republican Party, which claims that climate change is a hoax. And these are all Republican senators demanding action from Canada.

@the5thColumnist@mstdn.ca True enough, except that these senators belong to the Republican Party, which denies the very existence of climate heating. Their demand that Canada do more to "stop wildfires before they start" β€” in a country covered by 3.69 million sq km of forest, in which 93% of wildfires are caused by lightning strikes β€” deserves nothing but scorn. Both forest drying & lightning strikes are increasing, both are due to climate heating, & both are causing an increase in wildfires. Their country is historically responsible for the largest contribution to global warming of any single nation, yet they are actively and deliberately increasing their contribution to the problem under the Trump administration that they slavishly support. Yes, let's all eliminate fossil fuel use. Canada itself should do more. But the US is actively promoting the major causes, and is far more influential in increasing the wildfire problem within Canada & globally.
