Just saw an 8yo Mastodon instance announce closure with only 7 day warning. 😱😱 That's nowhere near enough notice to let folks safely move, and totally screws over anyone who just moved since they can't move again for 30 days.

Please, folks, have responsible EOL plans for your instances. And if you're inviting new folks to fedi, make sure you hook them up with instances that have responsible plans.

Yeah, this is not a good situation at all. Good instances have a built-in plan to close down before they even start up, for example by putting money aside to cover three months running costs.
