So we do have to find an electrician to put in a 240v line and receptacle in the garage, but in the meantime,
Wow we're filling up the car tank/battery via a regular 110v plug point in the kitchen near the garage

(Just got an
#EV last week)

@SRDas@mastodon.online In most houses, longterm heavy load as EV charging on the house wirering may heat up cables to point of insulation melting or assembly points glowing leading to a fire breakout.

A properly dimensioned and directly routed wirering is highly recommended for any form of EV charging.

Besides that, congratulations with your EV. If it is anything but a Muskrat POS, I am sure it will be a joyful experience

That is strictly not correct if the wiring is to code.
A 120V outlet with a nema 5-15 will have wires that can withhold upto 15A spikes (and a breaker that will limit that too) but run 12 A (80% rule) continuously 24hr/day without catastrophic heating. So if your L1 EVSE is taking 12A (or lower) connected to a 110/120V outlet and is on a house which has been wired to code....one need not worry. The problem is if things have been done carelessly

@tizan@mastodon.social @SRDas@mastodon.online "In most houses ...", it is your choice, your risk, your insurance and your problem

Around here the warning is shared from professionals ... they might know how things were defined from elder standards and have seen how things are often built

But you do you - please consider your surroundings, though. Nature fires are difficult to put out again, and neighbours might not take carelessness lightly

The cost of a proper charger properly installed is nothing compared to savings with an EV, and the comfort of speed, easy timing of charging and safety is hard to ignore
