Finished the first pass of cleanup of the through hole connectors this morning. A little bit of fine tuning is still required on the ram sockets to get the new sockets installed on this #c64.

Once I get the second pass of cleanup done and can cleanly seat the sockets, I'll need to go through the traces to check for connectivity and breaks before I go on to solder in the sockets.

My process for the board was to add fresh solder to each and every pin, then use the desolder tool to clear the bulk of the solder, soften the remaining solder around each chip with a heat gun at 310C and lift each chip out one at a time.

This seemed to work great and I don't see any damage to the the through hole points. Some amount of solder mask has detached that I will have to repair and seal before I get too crazy.

I did verify that the VICII in this NTSC unit was toast, so it will probably get a FPGA replacement at some point or I may finally do the PAL swap that I thought I could do but haven't tried yet.

I'm hopeful that this SID chip is good however. I'll test it at some point this week.

https://youtu.be/aq2tlEr6_Ns?&t=96 NTSC to PAL conversion. Its not hard and from the looks of things, the NTSC chip inventory is at zero. #retrocomputing

Ugh, this thing must have gotten hit by a dying power supply. Two 4164, PLA and VIC2 dead. But it’s back. #retrocomputing

Geeze. Dead SID and dead BASIC ROM too. No output on the audio test and no text on the screen when booting normally. #retrocomputing

I think I found the problem with the BASIC ROM. #retrocomputing

Huh. It actually works. Imagine literally any piece of electro-waste from today still working in 50 years after you resolder a missing trace or pin back on. #retrocomputing

Functional keyboard with broken keyboard screw mounts. Did someone throw this across the room when it destructed? #retrocomputing

#commodore64 PAL conversion in progress. At this point, if you have a dead NTSC VIC, the USD $2 crystal oscillator and a PAL VICII from Europe is your best bet. #retrocomputing

Superb. Needed to adjust the color pot slightly to bring the color signals into spec for PAL. #retrocomputing
