@Benhm3@mastodon.social Wendy (they/them/ook) became my companion a while back. They are a nod to a challenge in season 14 of Jet Lag: The Game, where contestants had to go to an IKEA and pick up a DJUNGLESKOG without looking up what it was online.
So, seeing as I like to play the game, I decided to grab one to accompany me on my travels and playing the game.
Other friends of mine carry a different IKEA plushie with them, but whilst I am an ally, I don’t feel qualified to carry a BLÅHAJ around with me.
When I’m travelling they live in a pocket in my day bag, looking at where I’ve been and silently judging me.
As you can see from their lanyard, they are a fan of Deutsche Bahn, which is why they now claim to be a DBJUNGLESKOG.
They’re also a very convenient way to reserve a seat on a train when I head off to the toilet, or the restaurant car, and they easy to pick out when I return, and need to work out which of many identical seats is mine…
One year ago today, I started on my first Interrail trip in over two decades. Since then, I’ve barely stopped travelling.

Surprisingly, I won!
And whilst, there was a certain amount of, um, throwing it my way, especially as they failed to bring back the souvenir from the last curse, I had a final surprise for them:
A 10% time bonus. And a duplicate card. (As well as 30 min in time bonuses) so when all that added up… I actually won!
But, tbh, we all did. We all made mistakes, we all learned a great deal, and above all, we all had fun!
For now, though, I’m tired. The game ends tonight, and tomorrow we have a leisurely 200kph train in the morning up to NRW, before we split up and go back to the real world. Or travel, in my case.
We will be doing a lot of post-game breakdown tomorrow, I’m sure.
And of course, I got a trophy awarded to me. I shall put it up in my cabinet and treasure it always.
…And they even arranged a fireworks display for me when we arrived in Würzburg for the night!
Which was pretty impressive, given they only knew we were going there about four hours earlier.

So, after a number of conversations with interested parties over the last few days, I’ve updated the stats section of my #Interrail blog post to add some numbers people wanted to know.
It turns out that I spent 107 days travelling on Interrail out of the last 365, which is 29%. Of those, 44 days were actual Interrail travel days. Given the total number of travel minutes (according to timetable, the reality was more, given delays) then that’s an average of 5h 34 minutes on trains per travel day.
Juno was an “Austerity” Steam Locomotive, built in 1958, from a 1940s design. The engines were designed to have a two year life span, but Juno lasted ten years in service. Some other locomotives of this type were in service for up to 40 years.
