How did we end up in the timeline where instead of writing a note on a post-it and sticking it to the door one needs A HUNDRED THOUSAND GPUS WHICH COST A TRILLION DOLLARS AND BURN A TERAWATT OF POWER WHILE GIVING ZERO FUCKS ABOUT COPYRIGHT OR CONSENT?
Some genius made his AI remind him to get milk in the morning and it used up his $20 account balance overnight because it kept checking if it was morning every 30 minutes. Lmao. โAIโ

In the early days of personal computing CPU bugs were so rare as to be newsworthy. The infamous Pentium FDIV bug is remembered by many, and even earlier CPUs had their own issues (the 6502 comes to mind). Nowadays they've become so common that I encounter them routinely while triaging crash reports sent from Firefox users. Given the nature of CPUs you might wonder how these bugs arise, how they manifest and what can and can't be done about them. ๐งต

I just found out that WinCompose allows me to use the same compose key combinations on Windows as on Linux to create accented characters, special characters, etc... It's fantastic! I should probably make a thread about compose keys when I have some time because I feel not enough people know about them.

Two phrases about so-called AI that keep being repeated over and over are that "it's here to stay" and "you have to use it if you don't want to be left behind".
Now think about it for a sec, if they were true, why would they need to be repeated so often?
Yesterday I was buying some stuff from a stall in a market and my children (daughter & son) were looking at some bookmarks with cat pictures they had on sale. The conversation between them went roughly like this:
S: Can we buy one of these?
D: No look, they're done with AI
S: Oh, you're right
D: It was obvious
S: So cringe
At this point I also looked at the bookmarks and indeed, it was generative AI slop, but it took me a minute to figure it out. They spotted it immediately.
So dear tech bros, forget the whole "GEnERAtiVe aI iS So GoOd yoU caN'T telL it'S Ai". Gen alpha can tell it's slop at a glance.
Furthermore gen alpha thinks you're cringe. Which means you're doomed. Give up already, nobody survives being labelled as "cringe" by a 10yo.
And for the record, my children speak Italian but they did indeed use "cringe" because it's become a universal label for shaming whatever your parents do and you most certainly won't.
