Dear Fedi friends,

I would love to start a
#GratefulForYou hashtag, doing shout-outs to Fediverse people that one finds inspiring, enlightening, or just plain cool.

The online world can be a dark, overwhelming place and I just wanted to encourage others to shine a light on people who make a positive difference... to say, "I see you, I hear you and I value you."

Today my
#GratefulForYou goes out to @sylvia@social.lol, whose creativity & positivity always uplift & inspire me ❤

Who are you grateful for?

You do NOT need Mastodon's official app to join or use Mastodon.

To join Mastodon without the official app:

1. Choose a server from
https://fedi.garden or https://joinmastodon.org/servers
2. Go to the server's website and click on "Create Account"
3. You can then log in on your server's website, or use the same account to log in on any Mastodon app including the official one and third party apps

If you use Mastodon through your server's website, you might have noticed an eye icon 👁👁 in the top right corner of post threads. Have you ever wondered what this does?

This icon is really useful if you are viewing a thread with lots of posts hidden by Content Warnings (CWs). Clicking the eye toggles all the CWs for the entire thread open or closed, which saves a lot of time if there are many CWed posts in that thread.

If you do video livestreaming, you can do the same stream simultaneously across many platforms and combine their chats into one multi-platform chat.

This is possible through the free open software Social Stream Ninja, more info at
https://socialstream.ninja

SSN is compatible with Fediverse streaming platforms including OwnCast and PeerTube, and commercial ones like Twitch, YouTube etc.

It means you can give your viewers the option to use ethical Fediverse platforms without missing your streams.

Fedi.Tips
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services

p.s. You can see a VOD of such a stream in action in a recording of @kevin@puppet.zone at https://puppet.zone/w/q1jBVtvUYKMceDvzoiign6

The stream went out simultaneously on OwnCast, PeerTube, Twitch and YouTube, and if you watch the on-screen chat you'll see logos for all these services appear next to people's names.

🙏🙏 Thank you to @operationpuppet@mastodon.content.town for the advice on how this was done, and to @Mrfunkedude@mastodon.social for the original advice about Social Stream Ninja!

If you post a website link on Mastodon, remember to include https:// at the beginning so that it is clickable.

When you include https:// you get a clickable link like
https://example.com and you may also see a link preview box below the post.

If you leave out https:// you just get a non-clickable address like example.com and no preview.

🤓🤓 Special Bonus Tip For Nerds: You can also use other protocols for clickable links including gemini://, dat://, dweb://, gopher://, ipfs:// and ssb://

Fedi.Tips
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services

p.s. To make clear, the gemini:// referred to here is nothing to do with AI or LLMs or Google.

The Gemini protocol is a free open project started in 2019 to create a calmer simpler text-based alternative to the world wide web:

If you only use Mastodon through the official app, you are missing out on lots of features such as scheduled posts, pinned posts, list creation, account redirects and much more.

Third party apps and Mastodon's website interface have a lot more features than the official app, and tend to get new features earlier too.

You can find out about all the different ways of using Mastodon in this guide:

The official app is not the only way!

If you upload a video to #PeerTube and spot a mistake in it after publication, don't panic!

You may be able to replace the video file without breaking existing links or comments:

1. Log into your PeerTube server's website
2. Go to "Videos"
3. Click "Update" on video to correct
4. Click "Advanced Settings" tab
5. Under "Replace Video File" click "Select file", choose corrected video file
6. Click "Update"

If you don't see this option, ask your PeerTube server admin as they can activate it.
