@FediTips@social.growyourown.services
Hi
I am new to the fediverse, in fact fairly new to using social media. So far have been enjoying being a part of this place.
However wanted help with understanding the practicalities of using mastodon. I wonder if it is possible to keep expanding fedi.tips or a related faq.
Some specific questions
1. When posting a url does it preview automatically?
2. How does one attach a file like a PDF?
3. Which instances of the fediverse allow long form posts ?
And more such questions
TIA

Hello! 👋
1. Yes, if you post a link your server generates a preview automatically.
2. There is no way to attach PDFs on Mastodon, you can only attach media files like video, images and audio.
3. I've got a website at fedi.garden which recommends well-run servers, and it has a section on servers with larger posts at https://fedi.garden/tag/larger-post-size
There is more info about these on the website at:

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services @ramkay@mastodon.social Wow. The lead developer of mastodon seems not be friendly towards other fediverse softwares. Huh.
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services Thank you
I did make a long thread post - with a main article from a news site and followed up with reference links.
I suppose the work around to a long mulii-message thread is to link it to a blogpost or even a download to single pdf.

Another approach is to use a long form Fedi platform, for example Ghost and WordPress are blogging platforms with Fediverse support so that people can follow and interact with your blog from Mastodon etc.
