If you see something you like on here, don't be scared to give it a favourite ⭐
!
If you really like something, you might want to also boost it 🔁
(which shares it with your followers).
There is no algorithm on here, so you can like and share whatever you want without any additional side effects.
Your timeline on here is entirely in your direct control, it isn't going to push stuff at you or hide stuff just because you liked or shared something.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services yeah in fedi, there is only chronological timeline, not the saturated algorithm timeline which is favoring likes & number over fair timeline.
Fedi is good. The content in fedi is also more organic & human, without thriving for "exposure"

I've been curious about the difference between favorite and boost. Is it that people can see my boosts, but my favorites are more for me (like a bookmark)?
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services Could you tell me what this space with an ellipsis is, that shows up between two posts sometimes? If I click on it it disappears, but that is all that happens. Accessing Mastodon.social via a browser.

Look, that's obviously not true, or I wouldn't be reading your toot off of https://aus.social/explore !
There must be some reason it shows me some posts and not others, yes?

If you don't mind me hijacking this post ...
Is there a way to see an instance timeline, without creating an account on that instance ?🦎
@MelanisticPeacock@social.vivaldi.net
Favourites tell the person who made the post that you liked it.
Boosts share the post with your followers. When you boost a post, it appears in the timelines of your followers.
You will see posts in your own timeline that have been boosted by the people you follow (though you can switch this off if you want to).

I think we are talking about different things?
My post was about the timeline people see when they log on, the "Home Timeline". On most social networks people may get nervous about liking the wrong thing in case it messes up their own timeline. On here people don't need to worry about this because likes and shares don't affect their own timeline 🙂
The explore tab you linked to is a list of the most boosted recent posts, it's not anyone's personal timeline.
@lonelystone@mastodon.world
Yes, most instances have their public timelines available for anyone to browse (because it only shows public posts anyway). More info at:
https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-browse-the-local-timelines-of-other-servers-on-mastodon-can-i-follow-other-servers-local-timelines-from-my-account
(And by the way it is fine to ask questions on other topics in replies, at least it's fine in my threads 🙂
)
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services right, what you see isn't customised to you; you're referring to "The Algorithm". That's fine.
I'm not clear on how liking or boosting affects what everyone sees on the Explore page, though.
@Hyperlynx@aus.social
There's a simple formula in the code for the Explore page which IIRC forces it to only show recent posts which have had the largest number of recent boosts (and I think recent favourites also affect it somewhat). It also prevents the same account being listed more than once, to stop popular accounts from dominating the trending lists.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services I see. Makes sense. Thank you, much appreciated
