Sitting by a nice roaring fire, as one does on such a day as this. We don't have many fires, maybe four to six a year? About 3 logs per.

Doing a rough in-my-head calculation regarding GHG numbers, focusing on CO2, I see burning a litre of gasoline in a car contributes about 2.2kg of CO2. Burning a 1.5kg log contributes about the same.

My car gets about 20km per L of fuel (hwy), which was half my commute before I became a WFH consultant type. So I used to drive about two logs a day…

So I can rationalize a bit that my annual fireplace use is about 9 days of my old commute - say two work weeks. So I've still done reasonable okay reducing my carbon footprint overall.

Could certainly be worse if we heated with wood.

That doesn't address particulate contributions at all. Good thing fires in the summer are unappealing when air quality is typically worst.
