@girlonthenet@mastodon.social I'm generally quite anti the phrase 'men are trash' but fucking yikes.

@onqueerstreet@mastodon.social yikes indeed. Not all men but definitely - DEFINITELY - that guy.

@girlonthenet@mastodon.social I am so angry at men like this– mostly because of their rampant misogyny, the harm they unthinkingly do, and their apparent lack of capacity for self-reflection, but also, selfishly, because they take something that is deeply precious to me (masculinity) and make it synonymous with this fucking shit.

@onqueerstreet@mastodon.social Ugh YES, I can't imagine how grim it must be to be a dude having to wallow in this soup of shit that arseholes claim is 'masculinity' when in fact it is just insecurity wrapped in a blanket of entitlement. Have you ever written anything about what masculinity means to you? Positive masculinity to aspire to kind of thing?

@girlonthenet@mastodon.social I want to clarify that I wasn't tying to make this all about me, more to express that I get where the 'men are trash' sentiment comes from, because we let men like this define what it is to be a man, and that version of masculinity is trash.

I don't know i you'e seen my newsletter, but I write a lot there about masculinity and gender. This post in particular explores the guilt I felt as a feminist for
wanting to be a man: https://www.genderbent.co.uk/loving-masculinity-when-men-are-in-crisis/

@onqueerstreet@mastodon.social OHHH YES! I do remember this piece, it's fab! I wasn't saying you were making it all about you, I was just trying to remember cos I know you're v thoughtful on masculinity etc <3 Thank you for sharing the link!

@girlonthenet@mastodon.social Sorry, I totally know you weren't, I'm just still (overly?) cautious about not wanting to centre myself in these conversations if that makes sense?

And thank you, that means a lot! "Thoughtful on masculinity" is 100% what I'm aiming for. Another potentially relevant link is this one, about how I was worried that starting testosterone would make me more violent, but soon realised that the idea that testosterone is why men are violent is bollocks:

@onqueerstreet@mastodon.social OH! I missed this one but YES. This is bang on the money I think "I can’t help thinking that men are more violent not because of testosterone, but because we expect and excuse their – our – violence." Thank you for sharing!
