Verification on Mastodon and the wider Fediverse works differently to most social networks. Symbols like verified or βœ…βœ… or the word "verified" are NOT verifications as anyone can add them to their profiles.

Verification on here works through special links on an account's official website. You can find out how to create a verified link in this guide:

➑➑️ https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-verify-my-account

For example we know
@wikipedia@wikis.world is official as their profile has a verified link to their website.

How do you get the "verification" to work with accounts on other social media?

Fedi.Tips
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services

p.s. If an account from another server doesn't seem to verify on your server straight away, give it some time (for example try viewing it a few hours later).

I just tried various accounts like
@greenpeace@mastodon.social and @wikipedia@wikis.world which seemed not to verify immediately on my server, but after a while the green tick did appear on my server too.

Each server independently checks the verifications of profiles it notices, and if it's busy it seems to put verification checks in a queue to deal with later.

It looks like the
@arstechnica@mastodon.social account may have lost its verified link status. I’m not seeing it either via the app or the Mastodon website.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services On my Instance, @arstechnica@mastodon.social doesn't look to be verified. It does on mastodon.social though.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services @greenpeace@mastodon.social @wikipedia@wikis.world Here is my experience after being inspired by your post some hours ago. Outcasts is only on iOS, not Android or Graphene or F-Droid. I guess I can use the browser. Peertube looks awesome but not user/noob friendly. Looked through dozens of platforms on peertube none with instructions on how to join. No button to click to join to put email address or anything, but you can log on? WHAT?! Why would anyone log on if one has no account? Thats backwards, almost trollish to a new user, and mean. Very cruel actually.

Some platforms are for the owner's family members only which makes me wonder why it is even listed then? Shouldn't those be private? They're in the way of finding the perfect one. And many with really long restrictions, making it scarier than being alone with Peter Thiel, which is odd for a decentralized platform not even allowing political discussion. But none of that matters as I couldnt figure out how to open a peertube account. I cant even like a video let alone follow a vlogger. It is unnecessarily complicated. Im sure if I bang my head for another day or two I can figure it out. I know I can. I'm not new to the internet. But it shouldn't be that way. I think we had this same conversation years ago, when I last tried to enter this world and failed. Maybe it was someone else.

I just wanted to publicly share my experience. I had wanted to remove my videos from Google and post them on Peertube tonight, but I got to go to sleep soon. Have a good night yall. And sorry for sounding grumpy. But may the devs hear my cry. It was pain.

Greenpeace and Wikipedia show up as verified for me, but the other two still don't.

@hisold@toot.io

I'm not sure why this is, it's possibly to do with a cache of an out of date profile on your instance?

But yes if you look on the account's original page at
https://mastodon.social/@arstechnica it is verified.

Fedi.Tips
@FediTips@social.growyourown.services

@raineyday@mstdn.games

Yeah, I am wondering if the other two have altered their code since they first verified. That would explain why they're verified on their origin server but not elsewhere, as they probably did the verification on their own server long ago when their code was correct.

Once an account is verified, the origin server tends not to re-check, but other servers do.

The verification is still valid, it just won't show up on other servers in that situation.

p.s. If you look at the video publishing guide it includes a list of good PeerTube servers to sign up at.

I know JoinPeerTube.org is a bit overwhelming, but the server list on my article is much simpler.

Hi Sage, thanks!

I have a simple non-techical guide that helps people use PeerTube, either as a viewer or as a publisher. The best place to start on the guide is the page at
https://fedi.tips/peertube-video-hosting-on-the-fediverse

If you're just wanting to watch PeerTube videos, you don't need a PeerTube account. You can follow and interact with PeerTube accounts and videos entirely within Mastodon:
https://fedi.tips/how-do-i-use-peertube-how-do-i-follow-peertube-accounts-from-mastodon

You only really need an account to upload videos:

Hmm... I wonder if Ars Tech had it when they originally verified but then removed it on a later revamp?
πŸ€”πŸ€”

If they never altered their profile then mastodon.social would never re-check the code and it would continue verified, but other instances would recheck it when they federate the profile.
