Muting and blocking are really important tools on Mastodon. Mutes hide someone from you without them knowing, whereas blocks totally cut off contact with an account and prevent interactions.

To mute or block someone, go to one of their posts or their profile page and click β‹―, then select "Mute" or "Block".

I've done a guide all about mutes and blocks on Mastodon which answers lots of questions:

"From the muted person’s point of view, everything will seem normal."

πŸ€”πŸ€”

The muted person may interact with my toots in a way that they can reasonably expect I might answer, but I won't be seeing this and hence won't answer.

Related: A muted person might add an argument to a debate I read that I would want to counter. I won't be able to do that, as I'm not seeing that argument.

I hesitate to mute, as I'm afraid of the risk of social awkwardness.

It's totally up to you if you use the mute option, it's just there for people who don't want to see a person's posts and replies
