Given my many decades living here, my rule of thumb is that November 23 is the risk threshold date for winter. It feels like after that date there's a substantial risk that any snow will stay for the season.
Practically this means you can skip shoveling the earlier snowfalls, letting them melt, but by Nov23 if you do that, you risk it becoming an icy layer that fights you for the next three months.

That said, we seem to have two days of thaw that will get rid of the stuff we got on the weekend – but after that the forecast is grim with below-zeroC days stretching out towards spring.
I've got a fish pond to empty out still, so I'd best make that happen shortly.
