neither my bluesky or fedi circles use an abundance of hashtags, and people who do are usually ridiculed or judged silently.

corporate networks have no real interest in killing off the hashtag because they do wonders for discoverability and product feedback. even if they did kill off the hashtag. you could very easily just search up a keyword… which could still be a hashtag, because all they really are is hyperlinks to the search results for that keyword.

stop with your algorithm fear mongering, what we’ve categorized as β€œcorporate social networks” benefit from both highly predictable algorithms and easily accessible discoverability tools.

Corporate social networks are trying to kill the hashtag because they want users to only discover things through corporate algorithms 😩😩

Mastodon and the wider Fediverse love the hashtag as it allows humans to retain control of their feeds

You can use hashtags to label a post with its main topics. More info about adding hashtags at

You can follow hashtags to see posts labelled with those tags in your feed. More info at

"neither my bluesky or fedi circles use an abundance of hashtags, and people who do are usually ridiculed"

That's a pretty nasty way to treat people. Why would you make fun of people for using tags? Seems a bit bullying-adjacent
😞😞

"you could very easily just search up a keyword"

No, because the idea of a hashtag is to highlight what the actual topic is.

Also, some people do not opt into full text searching for privacy reasons. Hashtags allow them to control visibility.

Because some people are mean and sometimes make fun of or silently judge people because people are that way. People can be very mean and very nasty.

That topic can still be highlighted by searching up the hashtag in the text search. People used to use hashtags on websites that weren’t twitter before those sites implemented them properly, and they worked to the same effect. Either way, as you’ve ignored, corporate social media has no plans to remove this.

If a person has chosen to dilerbertly opt out of stuff for privacy reasons then I don’t understand why they’d want a spotlight on themselves in the first place. What are you talking about?

p.s. Another thing about the full text search vs hashtag thing, abusers on Twitter used to use full text search to target victims, so that was another reason why there was such concern about full text search on here.

Hashtags mean you're totally aware of how search will see your post and you don't need to be so scared of mentioning something that abusers might target.

By keeping full text search opt in and retaining hashtags, it means people can avoid abusers more easily.

I didn't mention corporate as previous post was on character limit, but corporations are doing things like removing hashtag following:

https://www.slashgear.com/1832229/instagram-discontinued-following-hashtags-explained/

Corporations hate anything that bypasses the algorithm as it reduces their control over feeds. Social media corporations make their money from selling people's data and manipulating people's feeds.

Why should someone obey mean people? Eff them.

"If a person has chosen to dilerbertly opt out of stuff for privacy reasons then I don’t understand why they’d want a spotlight on themselves in the first place. What are you talking about?"

They want their posts to be searchable for the topics they choose, rather than for every single word they include in their post.

This is why it took so long for Mastodon to get full text search, because this privacy issue had to be resolved.
