Are you using the official Mastodon app? (The one just called "Mastodon")
The official app is slow to load sometimes. The web is much faster, and third party apps are also worth trying as they tend to be better too. There are some good options listed at https://fedi.tips/which-apps-can-i-use-should-i-use-the-official-app-or-a-third-party-app/
