If you just want one alternative, https://mas.to is a much better option. It's reliable and has been online since 2019, and doesn't suffer from the problems of mastodon.social.

If you want to choose from a wide selection of servers, there are human curated lists of well-run reliable servers at https://fedi.garden and https://joinmastodon.org/servers

I appreciate your take, and your help when I was starting out here.
And you make good points, I just feel like it will be lost to the masses.
And here is my hot take (Which may or may not be good. LOL) I actually have a MS account I setup in 2018, but didn't start using it till maybe 3 to 6 months ago. I use it for general posts, leaving this instance for ham radio stuff.

@FediTips@social.growyourown.services misskey instance, bring my followers etc over, it wasn't hard to do, & I'm not sure anyone really realized I moved. That small instance was having resource issues - and my take was a larger instance probably would not have those issues.
And because I had the account already I just started using it.
When the "you need verified" spam was happening I found the admin on MS to be fast to stop it, also posting about it.
I agree it could be better - filters work well and that is what I use.

I'm not sure I really want to move again, I personally tend to stick with something until either I can't or am forced (for one reason or another) to change.
I think small instances are great, but small instances also have issues - mostly resource related.
I've actually considered running my own private instance - and I might still take that challenge up.
