reposting this story about food and immigrants in the tenderloin (where I live): i know it very well.
it's basically little saigon on larkin, little lahore on hyde, and there's been a recent proliferation of excellent yemeni businesses as well and also possibly the largest density of mayan food outside of the mission. maybe even larger than the mission? there's a ton of yucatan and other mayan restaurants. even a honduran one.
my pick for best pho: pho tan hoa
my pick for fave bรกnh mรฌ: bo&beurre
my fave little vietnamese cafe: mong thu
halal date night for young muslims: kinara fusion (get the golgappa shots, and pakistani pizzas)
my fave cheap takeout food: the pork & shrimp rolls at hello sandwich
a good bar burger: pomeroy, formerly shovels
a good halal burger: ember grill
cheap pizzas that i like: pronto, and napoli. outta sight is a bit nicer, but i like these a lot
my favorite sf restaurant: cantoo (get the $9 venezuelan cantonese roast chicken + fried rice combo)
my fave grocery stores: hiep thanh (featured in this story) but also tuong phong. also good halal grocers in the area
halal fried chicken: halal fried chicken on geary, or chicken king (various places in the TL, in the grocery stores) or krispy krunchy
best vegan food: the vegan bรกnh mรฌ at mong thu, all the food at golden era
best cheapish sushi: fishmandu (run by a lovely nepali couple who used to work with a japanese sushi chef in half moon bay)
best thai food: sai jai thai, zen yai
best late night thai food: ithai
best thai brunch: lapisara
best tandoori chicken: shalimar
best chicken tikka masala and butter chicken: chutney
best vietnamese chinese noodle shop: hai ky mia gia
best grilled beef and rice plate: golden lotus
best garlic noodles: golden lotus
